Celebrating the New Year on the Mediterranean

Despite the fact that we spent the week following Christmas under the weather, we made a trip to Kizkalesi for New Year's. Even the cloudy skies couldn't deter us from visiting the Mediterranean for the first time! The small beach town of Kizkalesi (Maiden's Castle) is named for the crusader castle located just 150 meters off shore. With silky soft sand and unbelievably blue water, this town is a vacation spot for the Russians, Germans and Turks. It took us only an hour and a half to get there.
Every available plot of land is used for crops.
The sun makes an appearance as we get closer!
Kizkalesi...worth the drive!
Korykos Castle was just down the beach
The weather was a bit too cold and windy for us to spend much time enjoying the water or the sand, but we still went for a walk and took in the view. Supposedly the water stays shallow for quite a while and the waves are usually non-existent, making the sea into a great big swimming pool. We stayed at a hotel right on the beach called Angel Saadet, which is owned by a retired Air Force guy who married a Turk. They hosted a delicious New Year's Eve meal that night.
Elijah and Daniel played with Jenga blocks by the Christmas tree
Ezekiel napped by the fireplace.
We enjoyed a fresh breakfast before heading back home.
The rain hit hard in the evening and that night, but it didn't interfere with our fun. Daniel and I even got up to view the fireworks right outside our window. I don't think either of us have ever been that close to them before!  New Year's is a huge celebration in Turkey...Christmas? Not so much.  :o)

Ezekiel rolled over!
As far as what is new with the boys, Ezekiel rolled over for the first time! We had been watching him get close for days, and fortunately we were all right there when he did it. Yeah, Zeke! Also, remember when I mentioned how charming the unique it was to have keys in each door of our house? Well, every door has a different key, so Elijah has successfully mixed them all up for us! And apparently, Elijah discovered that Z's teething keys work just as well as any of them!

I've enjoyed the pictures in your posts. I'm glad you revived your blog. The castle and beach look incredible, and those hand carved chests looked amazingly intricate, too! Are you going to buy a large chest? It's nice that you know the Air Force will ship it home for you when you move. :) You sure are having some amazing experiences!
