DIY Weekend

Here I am at 20 weeks! I'm so excited to have made it half-way through already. My big smile is not just because Daniel made me laugh, but because I'm actually starting to feel that good again! Yeah!!

So what did we do to celebrate? We did what every crazy pregnant lady wants to do...projects! My wonderful husband allowed me to drag him through a weekend of diy projects (do-it-yourself). Maybe we watch too much HGTV or something, but I can't help myself! Just like with every other major life event, I need everything to be perfect before Baby DnA arrives! Before even getting to the baby stuff, the rest of our place has to be in order. While I am focused on making our home look perfect, Daniel has been focused on finding me a new baby-mobile car and making sure our place is clean enough for the baby (hence a new vacuum). In other words, I'm not the only one who's in "planning mode"!

Without further ado, here are our "projects" from this past weekend:
Our new bedroom furniture

Our first project was actually on our new bedroom furniture. We needed new furniture really badly and got a fantastic deal on the set of dressers and nightstands. However, Daniel was really bugged by the unattractive, wooden knobs. Because we watch too many makeover shows, we went to Lowe's thinking it would be a cheap fix to replace them with nicer metal knobs. The hosts on the shows are always saying that replacing hardware is such an "inexpensive" fix...talk about a rude awakening! At $3 each, 24 knobs were not going to be inexpensive! Instead we picked up a can of metallic spray paint and ta da! We now have fabulous looking dressers!

Our new upholstered headboard

Our second big project was an upholstered headboard. This project, which looked so easy on paper, turned out to be a real pain! We had to improvise without power tools...and then the pregnant lady had to mess things up even further. **Note to the wise: DO NOT allow a pregnant woman to do any mathematical calculations. Prego brain is in full effect and may have unexpected results!**

Daniel was browsing the aisles while I requested a piece of plywood to be cut. I read off my sheet of directions and was confident that I had everything down correctly. Daniel had been sure that we could fit a headboard-sized piece of wood in the back of his Corolla, but it was very obvious once we got to the car that this was not going to fit. So we left the wood and drove home to get Suzy (our Subaru Outback). We barely managed to wedge the massive piece of wood into the back of Suzy even with the seats down! We were scraping the sides of the car and had to use bungee cords to tie down the wood and partially close the back door. Of course, we had to complicate the whole thing by driving uphill the entire way home!!! There are no words to describe how stressful things were on that drive home. The back door was bouncing and poor Suzy was making sounds we had never heard before. "Oh, Jesus!" was about all I could manage to pray the entire trip back! So we make it home and bring the wood into our dining room, when finally Daniel comments on how LARGE this headboard is; "How big did you want this headboard?" I started to explain that I had followed the directions and it should be a perfect size for our bed, when I had this sinking feeling. When I look back at my directions, I see that I had requested the board to be the same size as the fabric I needed to wrap around it!!! The board was 16 inches too high and long!! This headboard would have been made for Goliath!! My directions actually said, "Headboard = 32' x 56' ", but I had somehow ignored that part!

Anyways, we didn't have a saw and our neighbor didn't have a saw, so...our cheapest fix for this incident was to throw away that piece (I know, don't kill me for that!) and buy another. This time, Daniel stood next to me as I gave the measurements. After a lot of hard work, the headboard looks great! I'm making a bedskirt to match and we even got some new bedding. I'm happy to say that the end result made it all worth it!

**Look for a post tomorrow night, as we should be finding out whether Baby DnA is a girl or boy!

**UPDATE** Our ultrasound got pushed back, so we'll hopefully have news about Baby DnA on Tuesday night!
